Mark English is crowned 2010 CBMPT Champion
Mark English is the coveted 2010 Coral.co.uk British Masters Poker Tour champion after winning the end-of-season play off and a £10,000 sponsorship deal from the bookmaker for 2011.
The Londoner, who was the last of the eight finalists to qualify by winning the online final, was ranked an outsider at 14-1 by sponsors Coral who ran a book throughout the event.
English had stiff competition at the final held in Blackpool on 8 November as the field also included the winners of the six regional legs of the 2010 CBMPT and highest cash winner and defending champion Mark Trett.
The early stages of the final where dominated by Lam Trinh who continued the same aggressive style which won him the Nottingham leg of the tour. The recent form of Teeside winner Dom Mahoney came to an end as he was the first to go when his all-in with J - 10 fell short against early pacesetter Lam’s Q - Q and he was shortly followed by Bristol winner Dave Harris who also fell short against Lam.
After four hours of action and six of the finalists still remaining, Lam was chip leader with 23,000 followed by English who had 16,000. The next player to go was pre-tournament favourite and Liverpool winner Mark McCluskey when English’s J – J was good enough to beat McCluskey A - K. With the tournament picking up pace, Edinburgh winner Jonny Denton was next to go, when chip leader Lam called Jonny all-in and his 7 - 5 hitting two pairs against K - 10.
The craziest hand of the tournament came when three players where all-in pre-flop with pocket pairs. Leeds winner Ross Johnson had 5-5, Trett J-J and English A-A. By the end of the hand Johnson crashed out making English chip leader and the final three between English, Trinh and Trett.
In the first hand of three’s up Trett’s short stack was boosted with Q -Q all-in against Lam’s A -10 and Trett came out on top after flopping a full house (queens full of threes).
Trett’s fate was all but sealed when he made a large pre-flop raise with K-6, which was called by Lam. The flop came down K – 7 – 2 and Lam moved all-in to which Trett called. With the cards on their backs, Trett was ahead with top pair and Lam has 7-5 giving him middle pair. The killer card was a seven on the turn and the river (2) gave Lam a full house, leaving Trett crippled with the short stack of 8300. The next few hands were Trett pushing all-in and he finally got called by English who knocked the defending champion out.
With the two Coral sponsored players now known for 2011, it was down to which one would receive the £5,000 or the £10,000 sponsorship deal and title.
Heads-up started with Lam Trinh having a slight chip lead with 45,400 against Mark English’s 34,600. After fifteen minutes of sparring, the first meaningful hand occurred when English made a pre-flop raise of 8,500 and Lam coolly announced all-in. After a few minutes English made the call and turned over A – Q and Lam looked frustrated as he turned over his A – 7. The flop missed and when the turn came down a queen and the river missed the new chip lead was English.
The deciding hand in the tournament came when Lam yet again announced all-in with A - K and English made the call with K-Q. When the queen came down on the flop Lam knew it was all but over and when the turn and river missed English was the new CBMPT Champion.
Coral.co.uk’s online poker manager, Marc Tibbo, said: “It was a great evening and overall I would say the best player on the night won. However, a special mention also needs to be made to Lam who’s aggressive style contributed hugely to an exciting final. We’re really looking forward to working with both these players in 2011 as I am sure they both have a huge future ahead of them in poker.”
Marc added: “I would like to personally thank Alistair Findlay and the AWOP guys for everything they have done during this year’s tour. Also, Mark Trett has been a fantastic champion and ambassador for Coral and the game during 2010.”
The finalists for the 2010 CBMPT were:
- Dave Harris: CBMPT Bristol champion
- Ross Johnson: CBMPT Leeds champion
- Mark McCluskey: CBMPT Liverpool champion
- Lam Trinh: CBMPT Nottingham champion
- Dom Mahoney: CBMPT Teesside champion
- Jonny Denton: CBMPT Edinburgh champion
- Mark Trett: Tour top money winner
- Mark English: Online league champion
Jonny Denton wins Edinburgh title and last Play-Off place
Jonny Denton has won the final leg of this year’s Coral British Masters Poker Tour (CBMPT) in Edinburgh to secure a seat in the coveted end of season play-off* where £15,000 in sponsorship packages are up for grabs.
The Alnwick ace who is known as ‘jonnyrkd’, claimed over £16,000 and his first major live event trophy in style after beating the previous leg winner Dom Mahoney in an intense heads-up battle.
An outstanding turnout saw 115 would-be champions make the journey to Edinburgh, for what proved to be the richest prize pool of a very busy poker weekend and 21 came back to start the second day.
Jonny had to build his stack quickly after starting day two with only 31,300 in chips when the average was at 54,300. Doubling up within the first couple of hours, Jonny got in his stride as he proceeded to build his stack.
By the dinner break he had 82,300 chips. While he was below the average stack size, his intent was clear and it took less than an hour after coming back for another double up. Jonny shoved all-in with A – J against a raise from Dom Mahoney with 3’s. The first card down was a J and the hand was secured although Dom still had over 100,000 chips left.
Jonny was now one of the big stacks and knocked out Peter Grice in eighth followed by circuit regular and pro Ash Hussain in seventh and Chris Roberts in sixth. As chip leader with 425,000, he continued to build his dominance at the table taking out Carl Williams in fifth and Aaron Barry in fourth. The icing on the cake came as he went on to take the third place finisher Barry Burns out of the tournament with KK v 88 and with both hitting a set he secured a massive three to one chip lead going into heads up against Dom Mahoney - the winner of the last leg in Teesside.
Despite a good fight Dom had an uphill struggle against Jonny’s massive chip lead and within the hour it was over. Jonny’s Q – 8 off suit making two pairs to beat Dom’s K – 7 won the title.
Coral.co.uk’s online poker manager, Marc Tibbo, said: “This was my first event with Coral and I was really impressed with the whole tournament, from the casino to the standard of the players. Jonny is a well deserved winner and I look forward to seeing him in the Play-Off in Blackpool.”
Marc added: “As the last leg of this year’s tour we couldn’t be happier with the turnout. The whole weekend has been an incredible success and is a fitting close for what has become known as the ‘People’s Tour’. All that is left is the Play-Off final for the £10,000 and £5000 sponsorship packages and I’m really excited to see who will be waving the Coral Poker flag for us next year.”
Separately, Coral sponsored player and 2009 tour champion Mark Trett secured another seat at the Play-Off final by winning Friday’s £200 side event and taking the tour ‘top money winner ‘seat. With seven of the eight finalists now decided, the six online league winners’ face-off is on Tuesday, 2 November at 20:30 on Coral Poker.
The seven already-confirmed finalists are:
- Dave Harris: CBMPT Bristol champion
- Ross Johnson: CBMPT Leeds champion
- Mark McCluskey: CBMPT Liverpool champion
- Lam Trinh: CBMPT Nottingham champion
- Dom Mahoney: CBMPT Teesside champion
- Jonny Denton: CBMPT Edinburgh champion
- Mark Trett: tour top money winner
- TBC: online league champion

Dom Mahoney wins British Masters Poker Tour Leg 5 in Teesside 2010
We started day one with 91 runners which was a good turnout. After the days play the field had been reduced to 18 players with plenty of familiar faces.
We started Day 2 with Greg Garrett as our chip leader, but after only 2 hours we had lost 8 players as Mark Trett went on a rampage!!!
The final table was fast and furious with plenty of play still remaining their was some very good poker.
Eventually we were left with the same two that competed for the final last year. Mark Trett & Dom Mahoney. This time it worked out the other way round as Mark Trett finished second and Dom Mahoney took home the title, £14,000 The Winner's Trophy and his seat in the Sponsors Play Off for his chance at a £10,000 deal for 2011.
Lam Trinh secures Leg 4 CBMPT Nottingham trophy
Lam Trinh claimed the title of champion in the Nottingham leg of the 2010 Coral British Masters Poker tour last weekend (30/07 – 01/08) in a hard fought game ending with a thrilling final table and an epic heads up contest.
While local hero Trinh bought in as an alternate, he not only made day two, he also took home a £11,580 prize and a seat at the end of season play-off* and will now have the chance to win an additional £10,000 sponsorship package for 2011.
In the main event, competition was fierce among the 61 players, which were made up of both locals and tour regulars whose quality of play was exceptional. Only 11 made it to day two including four of the 14 online qualifiers.
Lam played a great game against the seasoned field. Having started day two second in chips, he kept the pressure on the competition knocking out the first player of the day and experienced poker pro Ash Hussain.
After WPT magazine’s Duncan Wilkie got knocked out by eventual runner up and tour regular Tom Fielding, the leg was down to nine and the final table.
The final table started with cautious play all-round due to only seven of the nine remaining players being guaranteed to cash. It did not take long to heat up though as Lam started to take advantage of the cautious nature of his opponents.
Mark English was next to go, beaten by well-supported local favourite Aarun Bernard. Shortly after, Ramazanali Abbassi was knocked out on the bubble by Tom Fielding. The next hour and a half saw Lam Trinh and Tom Fielding carve up the table between them taking it in turns to eliminate Danny Hernon, Michael Moore, Julian Davies, David Maudlin and Aarun Bernard consecutively.
The scene was set for an epic heads up battle between Lam and Tom Fielding. Lam started ahead but the chips were passed back and forth. At one point he was down almost 5-1 with only 80,000 left. But his aggressive style and his confidence counted and after a series of double-ups he was right back in it. Trinh won in style when he trapped his opponent, snap calling an all-in on the river with his flopped full house (2’s full of 6’s).
Coral.co.uk’s assistant poker manager Philip Harper, who was present at the event said: “The coral.co.uk British Masters Poker Tour is known for attracting the best of the local players and Nottingham was no exception. Nottingham is the UK’s poker capital and it really showed in the quality of the play. There were some incredible moments in the main event and the feedback from the players was immensely positive. Lam’s style was very aggressive and combined with his confidence he was a true force at the tables, victory was only a matter of time.”
Harper added: “We do however have to congratulate Tom Fielding. This was his third final table and he was unlucky not to win here. He does have a strong lead in the cash winnings league though, which could secure a seat in the end-of-season play-off. The next leg is in Teesside on the 10 September. They have a huge local following and we have six weeks of online qualification so there is plenty of time to win your seat at www.coralpoker.co.uk.”
Mark McCluskey wins third leg of 2010 Coral British Masters Tour
World Cup week end saw Spain lift the World Cup and in Liverpool we had another winner in the shape of Mark McCluskey. One of the veterans of the UK Tour Mark showed the young guns how it should be done.
With a fine display of disciplined poker over the 2 day £500 Main Event here at Leos Gala Casino, located overlooking the docks in the town centre, Mark battled his way through to lift the Trophy.
It was a hard fought contest. In the mix were a fine array of quality players in the shape of Brian Martin who finished in 6th place, Ky Hutchinson from Blackpool 5th, Ron Wilkinson from Whitehaven in 4th leaving John Callaghan, John Cullen and Mark to fight for the title. First to fall was John Callaghan who managed to get all his chips in on the flop against John Cullen, on their backs on a board of 8s 8c and 7s and Callaghan shows 2 red sixes...Cullen has As 9S for a nut flush draw with 2 overs...turn is the 5s and it’s all over for Callaghan but he secures third spot and £4340 to soften his disappointment.
Heads up was a cagey affair with Mark and John Cullen exchanging the chip lead several times. After an hour and 40 minutes there was the All-in and call .... Mark flipped over 9 9 and John was behind with A K off....board ran out 5 7 2 2 4 with no help to improve John’s Big Slick and we had our Champion. John Cullen, a local player, should be very proud of the great game he played but lost the most important race at the crucial time...we’ve all been there. However the £5610 will be some compensation.
In addition to being crowned Leg 3 Champion, Mark takes home £9,430, the Trophy and off course his seat in the Sponsors Play Off Final at the end of the season. Where the six Leg Champions, the best Online qualifier from the Online League and the highest money winner not to secure a title, will play for two sponsorship packages for the 2011 season. First is a £10,000 package and second receives a £5,000 courtesy of our Sponsors, Coral.
For your chance to be in the Sponsors Play Off why not join us on the next leg of the Tour as we head to Gala Casino Nottingham in three weeks time. July 30th to August 1st are the dates for your diary with Live Satellites being held at the Casino and Online qualifiers available every day on Coral Poker, Gala Poker and Eurobet.
Ross Johnson wins second leg of 2010 Coral British Masters Tour
With the main competition coming from England’s first match in the 2010 World Cup and the WSOP in Las Vegas an amazing 69 players made the journey to Gala Casino Leeds for Leg 2 of the Coral British Masters Poker Tour this weekend. This created a prize pool of £34,500 with the winner taking home £12,770. It also proved to be an extremely strong field with some of the UK’s top players turning out to do battle for the top honours.
After two days of top class poker the Final was dominated toward the latter stages by Ross Johnson who knocked out Steve Chadwick in fourth place with Steve taking home £ 3,100. Next up was Ash Hussain who was one of the favourites to take down the title but he became Ross’s next victim and can lick his wounds with the third place prize of £4,830. That then left only one obstacle in Ross’s path to the title. That came in the shape of one Paul “Swampy” Gardener, another favourite to take down the trophy but by this time Paul was a 7 to 1 chip underdog and within 2 hands it was all over. Ross, having called Paul’s all in with 9 – 2 of clubs, Paul showing King Jack off, hit a flush on the river to take down the title. Paul can take heart in coming second in a very strong field and off course the £7,240 for second place. It was a well deserved win for the man from Gateshead and along with the £12000 and the title he has also secured his seat in the Play off for the Coral Sponsorship package for 2011. A great effort all round from all the players who made the final a feast of entertaining poker.
Next up is Leg 3 in Liverpool when the Tour will return to Gala Leos Casino in four weeks time starting on Friday July 9th thru Sunday July 11th. This has always proved to be a popular venue and this year will be no different so we look forward to seeing you in July.
Bristol man wins first leg of 2010 Coral British Masters Tour
Local poker player David Harris won the first leg of the 2010 Coral.co.uk British Masters Poker Tour,,, which took place over the weekend (7-9 May) at Gala Casino, Harbourside, Bristol.
David, a regular player at the casino, was cheered on by a large crowd as he beat a field of 109 to claim the title of Bristol champion and nearly £16,000 on Sunday night. He also takes the first seat at the end-of-season play-off, which will see the Coral.co.uk British Masters Poker Champion 2010 crowned and a shot at the £10,000 sponsorship in 2011*.
Known as “Bomber” to his friends, David is no stranger to success at the poker table as he also won the £200 side event in 2009.
With 89 players busting on day one, we set-off on level ten on day two with 20 players with ten making the cash places - David Harris (179,000 chips), Tom Fielding (110,000) and Mark “The Threat” Trett (80,200) led the field. Players fell fast and before the end of level 12 we had our final table, which included Mark Trett (CBMPT 2009 champion), Dave Swan (3rd in Teesside CBMPT, 2009) and online qualifier George “Inthefinal” Stewart.
Action on the final table was slow; however at the start of level 17 this changed with George Stewart heading out when Tom Fielding paired his Ace on the river. After four all-ins in ten crazy minutes and players roughly even in chips, the remaining four agreed a deal for £9,000 each and to play for the remaining £7,000, title and play-off seat.
Dave Swan left immediately when QQ fell when Tom’s hit running Aces to make his set, followed shortly after by Mark Trett (Q8 v David’s AJ). Local players Tom and David were now heads-up and well supported on the rail.
After 40 minutes heads-up, Tom’s stack was down to 250,000 when Tom (10-8) called David’s all-in (8-4) on an eight-high flop, and a 10 on the river meant it was over and David was the champion.
After presenting David with his trophy, tour manager Mark O’Donnell said: “It has been another great event here in Bristol, and we deliberately kicked off the CBMPT here because we knew it would live up to the cracking standard that was displayed here last year. It is possibly one of the toughest local fields on the tour, and the final table proved that.
“David, Tom and Mark did a great job in turning first day leads into top three finishes. We saw a lot of flops on the final table and all players got involved, so to come out on top is testament to their game.”
O’Donnell added: “We move on to Leeds now for the first of four legs in the Midlands and North, so I’m expecting more strong turn-outs. We’ve got a great following up there, especially in the North East.”
